Take a shot every time Macbeth says "thy" | The Porter's Netflix Queue

The comic relief, yet the man behind the truth, the Porter is a key character in Macbeth. In the few lines that Shakespeare actually gives him, the Porter takes this chance to reveal a lot about the church while hiding it behind his drunkeness, protecting him from being condemned by the actual church. This was one way Shakespeare was able to tie in his social commentary into the play. By hiding his criticisms in character that was seen to be funny and comedic, Shakespeare utilized this tactic in order to get his true arguments across. The humor conceals the truth. Now, I present the Porter's Netflix Queue:
Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, a smart car, and a secret about the Catholic Church; who wouldn't love the thrill of this movie? I can see why the Porter would be attracted to a film like this one. Hidden behind the adventure and mystery is an expose that questions the moral foundations of the Catholic Church. Much like what the Porter is to the story of Macbeth, this movie has provided commentary on the Catholic religion as it reveals part of the church that could change the perception of it as a whole. This aspect of the film is what attracts the Porter to it, as it allows him to relate to it while both expose truths about the Catholic Church.
2. Heathers
As a bystander to events in the Macbeth household, the Porter has found some very unusual parallels between the lives of the Macbeths and the relationship between Veronica and JD. This dark comedy follows the life of high schooler, Veronica, as she navigates toxic friendships and a risky relationship with the school's "bad boy," JD. Due to JD's influence, Veronica begins killing off her friends one by one, making each look like a suicide with a replicated handwritten note. Throughout viewing this movie, the Porter notes similarities between each of the characters. The similarities in the way JD and Lady Macbeth go on to manipulate their counterparts into killing people; the way that both Veronica and Macbeth stray away from relying on their significant others, and start making decisions for themselves. However, what really appeals to the Porter about this movie is the humor sprinkled throughout the film that makes this twisted plot from being too dark and disturbed.
3. Santa Clarita Diet
This Netflix original series follows the life of what may seem like an ordinary family in Santa Clarita, California, yet they hide a dark secret. The mother had been cursed, so now all she craves and all she can eat is human flesh. From the 10 second preview, the Porter was hooked. The humor, the gore, everything. This became his new favorite show. It also reflects the play's motif of appearance v. reality, as the Hammond family presents themselves differently than what is actually reality.
4. The Wolf of Wall Street
While looking for a film to watch for the night, a few drinks in, the Porter settled on The Wolf of Wall Street as he had heard raving reviews and heard about its award-winning storyline. Not usually something he would choose to watch, the Porter was intrigued by the fast pace character of the stock broker that the award-winning Leonardo DiCaprio portrays in the movie. The thrill and excitement of the plot caused the Porter to escape his ordinary life. From being a part of the help in the Macbeth household, this movie allowed the Porter to see what it is like to rise in power and wealth, something he could never have. Instead, he got drunk every night in order to cope with this realization. This movie soon became the Porter's favorite as it immersed him into a life different to his own. Not to mention this movie also contains A LOT of drinking, drugs, and sex.
5. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Fresh onto the list, the Porter binged this new Netflix Original series the fastest he has ever watched a show. Inspired by the 90's sitcom, this new series is a darker retelling of Sabrina's journey into becoming a full witch. What really interested the Porter into this TV show was the element of the supernatural that played such a significant role in Sabrina's life. The Porter himself has always been aware of the supernatural in his own life, but has never seen in interact with him personally. The portrayal of it in Sabrina's life allowed the Porter to see what the extreme level of what life would be like if the supernatural played such a large part in it as it did for Sabrina's. Almost insignificant, except for the fact that he reveals the most social commentary in his lines, the Porter feels left out from the rest of the action of the play, so by watching this show he has filled the void of the drama, action, and adventure that Macbeth, Macduff, and the others experienced throughout the play.
Great blog post! I like how you chose a character that appeared in the book very briefly. It really shows your understanding. I really like your post because I know each of the movies and TV shows, for you chose some really popular ones that link to the Porter. Although, I have never seen The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I certainly have never seen that. I heard it's scary though. Great blog though.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, like Otto said, I love love love how you picked a minor character, and not Macbeth or someone super big. It might just be a me thing (those darn theatre kids) but I always think it’s more fun to pick someone like that and make a intricate backstory for them I also love how you mentioned that he felt left out of the play- I just thought it was funny. Great job :)
